
White Canyon, South of UT 95 Bridge, Glen Canyon N.Dry Hollow Thru-Hike from Utah State Route 12.The road swings to the southeast and just as it starts to curve to the northeast, park off the road at mile marker 84.3, entrance to the Boulder Landfill. Continue north and drive over the Hogback, pass Hells Backbone Road, and descend into Dry Hollow. Our meals will be provided by Hells Backbone Grill, a highly rated gourmet restaurant featuring southwestern flavors. There is room enough to squeeze three cars. The Devils Backbone - a challenge to drive, but beautiful sights to see. Drop a vehicle at the south end in a shallow pullout on the east side of the highway at mile marker 76.8 (north of Calf Creek Recreation Area and half a mile north of a large dirt lot at MM 76.3). Travel: A short shuttle is required for the thru-hike. The trek is within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Lacking a shuttle, we did the adventure in two sections but it is presented here as a thru-hike.

The hike features slickrock expanses, ponderosa gardens, a ridgeline traverse over sandy-topped and bare-stone prominences, and an historic road hacked into sandstone slopes. The tenacity of road-building Mormon pioneers is readily visible. On both sides of the UTV, a quick glance to the left OR the right reveals a sheer cliff. You navigate slowly up the path that is marked by the years of rubber turning the rock black. Cutoff road for three miles, completing the hike eight highway miles from the start. The Hell’s Backbone Backway is an unpaved road off the Scenic Byway 12 in Utah that goes form Escalante to Boulder. The Hell’s Revenge trail starts with a terrifying (yet exhilarating) climb up the fin of rock appropriately called the Devil’s Backbone. Exit the hollow by following the historic Claude V. Traverse the Dry Hollow-Boulder Creek divide. Traveling north to south, the route drops into Dry Hollow on a reasonable friction pitch.


It is a great drive that provides access to spectacular country. It is steep in spots and it can be treacherous during stormy weather. In one area it follows a narrow hogsback with sheer drops to both the right and the left. This hike delves into the mysterious and wondrous arena of chaotic formations seen east of the highway. The Hells Backbone Road is one of the most scenic backways in Utah. Essence: The Hogback on UT 12 straddles a thin divide between Calf Creek and Dry Hollow.
